Or would it sit in my closet and rarely get used? I really need another body before I buy more lenses though.

Yes but that's just cosmetic. The seller (local) assures me that the glass is pristine.

Not yet but I eventually may shoot sporting events. I've got a shoot this afternoon where I want to shoot a person on horseback, panning with her as she's riding to create a blurry motion shot. My 200mm is a bit short and the 400 would be perfect for this.

I prefer the 300 2.8 IS for the weight and size, but sometimes you really need 400.

You aren't going to take the 400 anywhere that you haven't planned, but the 300 is possible to just run around with, to some extent. It's handholdable for sure which the 400 is not, IMO.

Check to see if you have one in your closet first.

I do tend to talk myself into these things without thinking it out first.

Renting is a good option but this lens is for sale locally and I'm tempted to pick it up. I'm trying to justify owning one over the long run as this is a lot of money to spend. It would take several years for it to earn it's keep.

I use everything I buy. Maybe not today or tomorrow but it will get used.

I'm in the process of setting up a business and I keep my eye out for tools to run said business, especially if I can buy them at a good price. The question I have to answer is will this lens earn me any money or not.

I dont like getting lenses that are discontinued. The 300 is more versatile and you can hand hold it. Throw on a 1.4 and youre at 400 with hardly any change in dof/bokeh.

I personally always buy something when I need it, not down the road when I might need it. Especially for 3600 dollars

No, you can buy me a Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR. When you start up your biz, can I shoot with you?
