I want to get a new laptop, i'm thinking about the price range of 500-650. I'm primarily going to use it for the internet, homework, music, maybe some video games. Do you think this laptop is a good deal? It seems like a catch for a 2.00ghz core duo. Let me know what you think, and if you would recommend another laptop instead. thanks! :hs:

    it's a core... not a core2.

plus open box == walk away.

    don't do it.

x3 Open box items you want to be careful of.
I would go with Dell or see what else is out there.

Check out HP and Compaq models in a store, they're surprisingly good looking and well built, cheap too for the basic ones, which have everything you need anyway :dunno:

Open box is fine if you buy it locally. I wouldn't do it online though.

Plus, with Vista try to find one with of 2GB RAM.

RAM is cheap, dont pay too much for extra installed RAM when you can install the extra RAM yourself at a later date for very little, especially when it comes to Dell

that's like saying a 2005 dodge neon is a mercedes... or a 2007 passat is an audi or lamborghini.

or even more relevant, it's like saying a maxtor is a seagate.... or that a lenovo 3000 is the same as a thinkpad.

Just because a company got bought-out by another, does not mean that both divisions are treated with the same rules or that they are at the same level of quality.

    compaq is crap.

No, i have a Compaq laptop, my sister has a HP, they are absolutely identical other than the badge/branding, literally the same laptop except the badge.

They are both made in the same place, same line, just a different badge gets put on them at the end.

Maybe the older ones were different but the newer ones are just clones. the higher-end HPs might be HP-only but the cheaper ones are shared chassis

You seem to be full of shit. I just double-checked compaq.com and hp.com. I looked at Home as well as their Small Business offerings. None of them matched in specs or weights. Chassis also seemed different.

That coulped with first-hand experience repairing these machines, I am confident in saying that they are not the same product.

I own the Compaq C700 too and I can't complain. I would prefer an intel duo-core rather then the AMD x2 processor as it does get hot and is a little sluggish. Upgrading to 2GB RAM did help a bit. But for a $300 laptop (what I would consider as disposable) I don't see how you can go wrong.

yeah, its so cheap yet it does nearly everything the more expensive models do, the only thing it lacks is a proper gfx card for games, but then again, i dont play PC games anymore
