what would be wrong w/ the mil-spec? any reason you couldn't use them competitively?

Nothing wrong with MilSpec, When I get around to retrieving my 1911 from my uncle its a WWII USGI production, I dont shoot competitively but I'de imagine you'de probably want better sights on it for that, unless theres specific classes just for usgi/milspec. By my comment I meant I'de probably go with some sort of custom but this is a pretty good deal almost new for less then half the price of a custom can always add stuff if you choose too.

Sights can be changed, I've heard it can be a real PITA to do yourself, I was told to find one with the style sights I like already on it. :dunno: all second hand never tried to change any 1911 sights myself, I'm sure some of the 1911 guru's here can chime in soon on that.

That's a fair deal, about what you can get them for new. As to sights, they take a staked from sight, so nothing you can change yourself. Must aftermarket sights use a dovetail up front that would need to be cut. All in all a good solid 1911.

Last time I was at Sportmans's Warehouse they were selling them for $400, so while it's not shipped. If you can't get them local then shipped is a good price.

Front is staked and can be changed yourself but you'd need a staking tool or you could peen it in yourself; it isn't that hard, you just need patience. To get a rear sight worth a darn, you'd need it cut for NOVAK style sights; i.e. -- dovetail and then shave the top rear down.

With a mil-spec, you're getting a simple grip safety and not the more desired "dovetail". Also, I prefer an extended safety and slide stop; the safety is not a drop in part and would have to be fitted, but again, if you know what you're doing, it can be done in little time with some good files.

Trigger will be somewhat crappy, but with a new mainspring and sear spring, it can be improved. Get some good stones to hone the hammer hooks and sear, and you'll be good to go.

There's some other things that I'd change on the mil-spec (any of them) but of course after I got done with it, it wouldn't be a "mil-spec" anymore, so that point is moot.

All in all, it's a decent price for a decent, simple gun. Go for it.

If you buy new sights shops charge around $10 to put them on so its no biggie
