I want to get into serious digital photography. I now have some money to spend and have been researching cameras lately. I keep coming back to the 300d. Would this be a good camera for me? What would be a step below and a step above this camera?

I have been saving up for a camera for awhile, and I recently started working nearly full time for the first time in my life. :o It will break me, but I can finally afford it.

Enough for a 300d... but now that I have been reading even more into everything, it seems I can take awesome pictures and be semi-serious with some higher end point and shoot cameras like the coolpix 7900. Also, I was lookin at the powershot s2. Looks to be a great camera and I really like the 10x zoom. Anyone own one of those?

No answer for you.. but I was in the same boat as you, deciding between Canon PowerShot S2 IS and the Canon 300d.. and I was curious what made you choose the 300d over the S2IS? (Oh, and the S2IS is 12x zoom, not 10x. :o )

The 300d is just an all around better camera with the ability to take higher quality pictures. I will be buying better lenses in the future for it too.

Take some pictures with the kit lens and decide after a couple of weeks. No rush. :)

Do you have a basic understanding of how apperture and shutter speed works?

Somewhat. I took a photography class last year. Not digital but nonetheless I got a basic understanding.
