I am a total beginner right now, but I see this as becoming a good hobby.
The kit is selling right now for 1050cdn

or I can get this kit for 1450.

Or I can save a boat load of money and just get a D50 and get a better lens.

My budget is around 1000, but may go over a little

I really like the feel of my d50 over the xti

Ergonomics are pretty important to me though

Its the lens that produces sharp quality photos.
The body gives you features and options.

Buy a body that fits your needs.
Then put the majority of your money into quality glass.

the 17-85 is much better than the kit lens, but its not on the same level as "L" glass. If you want a temporary solution, get the kit lens and save for the 24-70 or 105 L or the 17-55 ef-s lens. Starting with a cheaper lens allows you to find out what range you shoot most of the time so can make a better decision for a more expensive lens

I'd only suggest the 17 85 if you find a hell of a deal on it. Otherwise, save up for something better. It's not bad, but it's not great, either. Money better spent elsewhere.

why don't u just get the XTI body and a Tamron 17-50 lens? Either that or a Sigma 17-70. Both are damn good.

you can get an xti kit for 1450...before tax?

Then I would suggest you go hold a d80 with the vr dx 18-70 lense...for the extra few hundred dollars, I honestly think you will be happier...
