Well... a couple of my buddies bought SKS's over the last few months... and I'm really starting to like them. They seem reliable, the ammo is dirt cheap, and there are all kinds of cool, relativley cheap mods you can do to them. A local shop has a couple for $150. I think they're Yugo's but I'm not positive. They're "new" so to speak... straight out of the box of grease. I sold some aftermarket car parts that I bought for my last car and then never installed.... so I have a money order on my desk for $150.... what a coincidence. It's kinda like getting a free gun. So what do you think? Should I go for it or is there something better for the money? Thanks.

Nothing... I didn't say there was anything wrong... I was just saying that's what it was... as opposed to a russian made one etc.

Get one :) It will turn into the rifle that you take when you can't decide what to take shooting.

It is a great rifle to start with. And the Yugo looks great with that blade bayonet.

no, go with a saiga. same price, roughly, but with detachable mags, a bolt holdopen device, and AK operating system.

If you want that, just buy an AK. The SKS is a battle rifle with it's own quirks and culture.

feels like a cheap POS(not saying they are)....would rather have a SKS

also Saigas run around $200-$219 as opposed to 139-150

what is involved in having detachable mags on the sks, the non sks-d rifle?

To start using detachable "duckbill" magazines for your SKS, you have to disassemble the rifle first.

To take out the fixed magazine, you need to take out the trigger group, then swing out the fixed magazine. Then you simply put the trigger group back in without the fixed mag.

    I'll take pictures.

I'd say 80% of the mags I've gotten would feed reliably. Other's have had worse experience. I wouldn't rely on the mags in combat, I wouldn't take that chance. I'd just use the fixed 10 rounder cause I know that will ALWAYS work.

I'd reccomend the Butler Creek synthetic, honestly it's the best aftermarket stock you can get for the SKS.

Type "SKS stock" into search. Should be the first result.

I've got one (a yugo), and it's a pretty fun rifle to just go shooting with. I just got in 640 rounds yesterday, so I'm planning on doing a little shooting myself soon.
