I am planning on buying a new car this summer. Although my dad is not happy about me looking at a foreign car (he builds classic cars..hotrods) I like the Mazda 3 s Grand Touring. I am 20 years old and still in college. I want a car that has good gas mileage and space for my friends. What is everyones opinions on the Mazda 3 s specifically AND if you own/owned a Mazda how good of a car was it really? PLEASE HELP!

I think it is a cool little car. I wouldn't buy one to fix up, but as far as a commuter it's pretty cool. Have you looked at other cars in it's class? Civic, corolla, sentra?

I can't see how this would be true (well any more so than any other FWD car)

The Mazda 3 is as much a Ford as a Mazda. Which isn't a bad thing in this case, just means the engine is a Duratec 2.3, and the chassis is the one shared by the Euro Focus and Volvo S40. It seems to be solid enough overall.

I can't help but think how expensive it is though. You could get a Civic EX with every damn thing including DVD navigation for less money (albeit with a few less hp). And once the Civic Si sedan comes out, the price will be unbearably close...

My roomie has the hatchabck with the 2.3 engine. While it certainly is not the fastest thing out there, it does alright, and has a ton of room inside. The interior is pretty well apointed as well.

Stereo is pretty good for stock, and I think it is factory wired for XM/Sirius

    :ugh:

The 2.3 engine is compeltely Mazda's. Ford stole it for use in thier craptastic Focus. It's an excellent engine, it revs to 7k rpms and it's bulletproof like the 90's japanese made hondas. The tranny in the Mazda 3 is superb, it uses double and triple cone syncros for silky smooth shifts.

I own a Speed 6 and I fucking love every inch of it. With Mazda heading in the direction it is, I think I'll be a Mazda customer for life. With the occasional porche and ferrari here and there. :p

Shumak11: I work for Mazda of Escondido in California, if you want I can provide you with a pin number to get s-plan pricing which is invoice, the BEST you'll ever get on a GT Mazda 3.

If you have better tires than the ones that come stock (goodyear), you will be fine.

if you can hold out for a few months more, wait for the mazdaspeed3 due in sept.

if i could have waited, i'd have bought one

now i'm stuck between adding a turbo kit, or trading in - neither is a good option

    same here, 2.3
116whp w/atx (120whp 16.6s @ 84mph, inc. full tank of gas :uh: and needing an ecu flash to take care of a 1-2 shift issue)
    134whp w/5spd

    cai adds 4hp and 4tq

factory radio seriously lacks bass, though the gt model has sat/mp3 available

I think the sedan is ugly, but I really like the 3 hatchback, awesome car. I have a mazda6 with the same engine (the 2.3 w/ a 5spd) and its very nice for the price, especially with all the rebates you can get right now. I haven't driven a 3 but i'd imagine its more fun since its much lighter.

only thing i can really say you need to do if you like to drive hard is REPLACE THE SPRINGS!lc

i can't count the number of times i've bottomed out already

TIEN H-Tech is preffered, slight lowering, much stiffer
    i'll order those next week

the S-Tech are the same stiffness, but a lower drop

    Can you elaborate on this?

I am looking at buying the 3 as well for a first car, and do quite a bit of snowboarding in the winter, so it would need to be able to handle some snow.
I have no issues driving in the snow with the parents accord, is this going to be worse? The lack of AWD is serioulsy the only thing stopping me from buying one right now :X

No it won't be worse than the Accord. You will just need different tires. The tires that they came with (Goodyear RSA's) suck.
