The only desktop in my range is one of the mini's

yes it is well worth it. although the mac mini is the only one in your price range, you might want to take a look at the iMac. it's about 200 more, but you get sooo much more.

I was nervous about getting my Macbook, because change is scarry, but I love it... super easy to use, and ther are tons of little "tricks" that make them more fun... my wife has been using it as well, and she wants to ditch her desktop PC for a Macbook soon too...

they are definately worth the price...

Save up for an iMac. With minis and iMacs you are paying a premium for the formfactor, with the minis you are paying heavily for it, at least with the iMacs it's not that much different than a decent quality desktop + monitor.

Yeah, the Mini seriously needs to go down in price now or go up in configuration. Considering what you get, its out of line quite a bit IMO now price wise.

If you need a desktop, try to go for the 17" iMac.
