With school and working for two newspapers, things have been nuts lately but i figured I'd throw some shots out there for CC. Some are for school, some personal others for news stories.

Features story on the Goshen, Oregon fire dept. These are the first responders for our college. I waited around to see if they would get called out so I could ride along, but no dice.

The captain and chief were not the most photogenic, but they are nice enough and very helpful.

$10,000 Thermal imager that they can use to find bodies, or search for heat sources. Talk about a pain in the ass shot. this was in a completely dark room and shot with a single shoe-mounted 420ex bounced up and to the right so it would light his hand, but not the screen.

Looking out of the station from the back of one of their Pierce pumper trucks. Another hard shot. Obviously the outside is blown but I wanted to very limited DOF (f2.8). So with this I had the 420ex FC +1 bounced to the right off of another truck to light the sticker.

On Monday, after our ed-board meeting my GF and headed over to Mt. Pisgah Arboretum for some flower photos that I have been meaning to get for my biology class.

    Iris tenax
    [IMG]

My GF loving the fact that my camera is seemingly permanently attached to me and pointed at her.

This was not really planned at all, but I love it. I just walked by her and pointed the camera and clicked with one hand not really paying attention until I looked at the photos yesterday.

    Cammassia quamash (Camas)

    Calypso bulbosa (Fairytale Slipper Orchid)

Looking up through the mixed conifer forest's canopy.

And then, just some random shot from a PDX photog meet up. I have not really edited too many photos but I thought this was funny. Looking through a ABzz ringlight before we started shooting.

Well, I'm off to class. Perhaps I'll post more later. :wavey:

    -420ex shoe mounted
-Shutter speed 1/250th (could have gone higher since 420EX will do high-speed sync)
    -f2.8
    -ISO320

Like I mentioned, I did not want to hit it strait on, so I rotated the head to the right and bounced it off of another truck and basically a 45 degree angle. Hope that answered your question?

Ha, shit I was wondering how I was able to get some details outside at 250th. Yeah, 1250th it is. Shit I don't even pay attention anymore to numbers. Just clicks on the wheel :dunno: I did some off camera stuff, but generally on assignments there is no time to set lights at each spot, which is why a good, ETTL swivel head flash comes in hand.

Looking at that bouce shot off the truck on the right.. you need to clean your sensor. Otherwise I hate you! HAHAHA Some pretty sweet shots. I love how sharp the very first pic is. Did you use a tripod for any of these? All around great pics!!!!

    Thanks,

That is dirt on the truck, not on my sensor. Though I am sure there is dirt on my sensor, it would not show up at f2.8.

Umm, no tripod, all of those were shot in bright daylight, so I was able to get the shutter speed I needed and IS FTW.

Sharpness is all about getting the light. I overexpose just about everything by 3/4 of a stop and bring it back down in ACR. Doing this lets me get all or most of the shadow details + highlights. Also, I have learned: Do not to be afraid of ISO, just learn how to use it. If you need to up the ISO to get a faster shutter, just make sure you overexpose 1/4-3/4 of a stop and shoot RAW. Then in ACR/LR whatever, you can bring the exposure down, pushing data into the shadows, reducing noise and creating a nice smooth photo. Plus for me, noise does not really print on news paper due to "dot gain."

You should move little pieces of plants out of the way. Little stems and whatnot can be bent or broken, or even just held out of frame for shots like those. It would make a difference.
