I bought a shotgun from a guy I know, and was hoping someone could tell me if I got a good deal or not. I paid $50 for both the gu and 2 cases of shells (but lots of the shells are cracked/splitting and worthless.) He said he bought it about 20 years ago and only fired it twenty times or so before putting it in storage and forgetting about it. The gun is a Remington MAGNUM Wingmaster Model 870.

I guess the big question is did I get a good deal? Also, how should I dispose of hundreds of shotgun shells that are cracked and useless? I wouldn't feel right just throwing them in a dumpster.

870s are nice pump guns, its no mossberg, but its a good gun, great deal!

use a utility knife to open the shotshells, divide up the components, soak powder in water, dispose of in garbage.

50 bucks for an operable shotgun is always a good deal

Yeah, no kidding. Mossbergs aren't worth the metal they are assembled with.

You got a superb deal! The Wingmaster is the most soughtafter pump that there is next to the old Winchester Model 12 (I think that is the right model). I have had over 10,000 shells through my 1st 870 and it has never given me a hard time. From a boat paddle to a walking stick, it has stuck it out through thick and thin. You just can't go wrong with a Remmy!

You are correct, my grandpa has 2 model 12s, one for me and one for my brother, though he's still got them :hs:

Thanks for all the replies. Hearing I got a deal makes me feel even better about owning my first gun. Now, which way to the nearest wide open field...

I love my Mossberg, it has been a very good gun. I also own and 870 Express Magum, and it's a great gun too.
