I'm looking into getting a shotgun now, but the guy at the gun shop keeps haggling me about if I want a rifled barrel or not. wtf?

Does it make that much a difference if it's smooth-bore or not?

I'm prolly just going to use it mainly for trap, skeet, a little quail hunting, and just burning up some money down range. That doesnt mean I'll never shoot slugs or decent ammo out of it though.

I'm pretty sure he just wants to convince me to spend extra money on something I dont need. no?

I gather that rifled slug barrels are immensely popular in areas where hunting deer and other large game is prohibited with rifles.

Otherwise, a smoothbore barrel is better for general-purpose things like shooting clays, buckshot, and slugs at close range if it comes down to that.

Go smooth bore. Unless you're shooting slugs at long range, there's not much to be gained.

Also, most manufactures recommend against shooting shot out of a rifled barrel.
