If all you want it for is home defense pick up a used mossberg 500 at a pawn shop for $150. I would only spend more if you are also going to use it to shoot skeet or hunt.

And there are no real reliablity differences between the 500/590/870/etc. They may be laid out a little differently so you just need to go out and hold a few, see what fits the best.

What's wrong with it? It's cheap, but I'm ok with that, since I'll probably beat the crap out of it anyways. Ergos feel fine, atleast for me.

    used is fine

Just inspect the action and make sure the barrel has no horrible signs of pitting. Other than that, kinda hard to mess up a shotty.

if you're going home defense, be sure to allow for extras like extended mag tube, shell carrier, and different stocks. A weapon mounted light is also essential.

Nice thing about the 590a1 is the metal trigger guard/safety, they 8+1 capacity, and the ghost ring sights. Its easy to put a light on any 870 or 500/590 though.

forend is longer than previous gen so it's impossible to unload without racking repeatedly. i'm also not a fan of the plastic integrated rear swivel point. :o

    Only the 20" M590A1 has 8+1...the 18.5" is 5+1

18.5" to 20" isnt a noticeable difference to me, and is worth the extra 3 rounds.

I kept an eye out for an older Remington Wingmaster in the shops and recently picked up a nice one for cheap.

I bought it a few weeks after buying a used 870 Express to check it out. Keep in mind that most of the Express models are designed to limit the use of aftermarket accessories like shell carriers and magazine extensions. Using them will require modifications to the gun. Far as I know, these are fairly simple mods but you will likely lose any warranty in doing them if that matters to you.
