Is that what it was? I just figured it was finish coming off of the wood.

unless you were shooting at a humanly impossible speed theres no way you got it hot enough in 60 rounds to burn the finish off the stock. most certainly cosmoline.

I used a bar of plain Ivory soap, rubbed it in a damp wash cloth then rubbed the stock down thoroughly. Use a clean, dry rag or washcloth and wipe the soap+cosmoline off of the stock. All done.

Or you could sporterize and not have to worry about a comsolined up stock.

They are beautiful. The furniture on mine was stamped Izhevsk 1944... wartime production. This is a 91/30. Clean, too. But in the end, I want to shoot it, and the sporterized stock fits me way better. :hs:

    :h5:

Fun gun to shoot for sure. I just hope I sprayed it with enough windex and hoppes solvent to keep the damn thing from corroding. :o

You're better off pouring HOT soapy water down the barrel and all over the bolt than you are windex. Then clean with Hoppes or CLP.

No kidding. I've not bothered to look into it because the old Soviet ammo is so cheap and plentiful, but are there manufacturers who make decent 7.62x54R that isn't corrosive?

Also, just finished watching 24: Redemption. Seen it?

Yeah I did. I have class on Monday nights though so I cant watch this season, but I will watch all of them together later on right before the finale.

Silver Bear makes excellent soft point ammo that is non-corrosive. ammunitiontogo has it for 8$ for 20.

I bet if you take the stock off of the action/barrel, you could get it in a regular sized oven, especially if you take the racks out and go diagonal.

Or you could leave the door cracked, and do one end of the Mosin at a time.

My M44 couldn't fit into the oven. :dunno:

I used oven cleaner, but I wanted to strip cosmo AND finish. I like how my turned out.

I washed a 91/30 stock in the washing machine. Short cycle, no heated drying. Left it to dry in a flat place where it was supported. All cosmo came out (along with the finish).

I also disassembled the entire action and and bolt and washed that as well. It beat going through 50,000 Q-tips and still not getting everything out.

Sorry for the big pic :o

It's more than the cost of a whole Mosin. :hs: I like everything about mine except the trigger though, it's like pulling nails out of wood. If I'm really patient I can get under 2" groups with mine off sandbags with handloads currently, so the rifle is accurate. I'm hoping this will make hunting and target shooting easier. I'm also going to polish up some bits in there and read a how-to about grinding a small bit away from the sear spring in order to safely lighten the trigger pull, unlike shimming it which lessens your sear engagement on these guns.

Maybe a pictorial will be in order when I get the trigger.
