In a few threads lately I've seen people expressing that they feel the need to compensate for having a short barreled 9mm by running +P ammo in it. In those thread I'd mentioned this letter I'd come across in the past, just found the thing today

Ah yeah whatever. Would be much better of using a faster powder and a tight crimp.

One of the match directors down here ND'ed himself in the knee with a 147 ranger out of browning hi power while cleaning his gun at home. Did not expand, very little penetration which was good for him. I don't have much faith in the 147 rangers myself.

I prefer the 124's 125's myself too. The 147's just have a real slow pushy recoil. They feel soft but to my eyes it looks like the slide is moving in slow motion./

I'm not sure that an area high on bone and low on meat like the knee is a great test for expansion...

There was a cool article in the 91 wound ballistics review journal by eugene wolberg. Usually they don't measure wounds in people that have been shot but he measured 27 wounds from people recently made dead by the SJPD and their 147gr ranger (note, 91, old ranger too) load. The idea was to see if it performs similarly in real bodies as it does in gel. The smallest recovered bullet was .462" and the average was .541"

On a related note, the average wound length was 13.2", no bullets left the victims, only 2 were near the skin, and the deepest wound was 17" long. A lot of people think that 12" is far more penetration than needed and would surely fly clear through a person but it isn't the case in practice.

Don't think my P229 9mm is considered short barreled (3.9") but I currently have 124gr +P in it. I need to try some 147gr to see the difference in recoil.

my point is expansion or not a 147gr 9mm at less that 6" should of ripped right though his knee. Not enter a inch and stop.

I'm sure he is very happy with the ineffectiveness of the 147 ranger, but I pretty much decided even if it was a fluke I would not depend on them for defense.

Are you saying you don't trust all 147gr 9mm rounds or just the Rangers?

Thats because bone is alot stronger than people would think, there 8times as strong as concentrate. How well do you think a 9mm round would penertate concentrate?

What's the density of concentrate? Does it hold up well to shearing forces? :mamoru:

  15. Through some amazing confluence of improbable events a man shot himself in the knee from mere inches away with a 147gr +p and it only penetrated 1"? (did it hit the bone?) Regardless of the stunning improbability of that being a repeatable occurrence, would you have us believe that had the cartridge instead been something in the 124gr range it would have produced some short of horrific wound?

What I'm trying to say is, is it your position that whatever caused that 147gr bullet to travel only 1 inch into the guy's knee wouldn't have had a similar effect on a bullet of your favored weight?

Did it hit bone or what? Needs moar details but I dont see any reason to think that what ranger did isn't what other ammo would do too. I'm sure it didn't just go 1" in tissue and then stop in the middle.

  17. This is a more concise wording of my above post. I can't believe that whatever caused the 147gr bullet to do what it did wouldn't have done the same thing to another bullet.

Can't really argue with the results from the HST 147gr rounds....

I carry DPX in all my carry guns, short and long barrel alike. I just like the performance that Corbon's ammo has.

I carry 147gr Gold Dots in my G19. Figured the +P 124s would over penetrate in a home defense shooting .... bad guy > wall > my kids :(

Frankly, anything that'll penetrate enough of the bad guy to do stopping quantities of damage, will also go through enough walls to exit the house.

Those fed terribly in my carry gun. I wanted to like them, but if they could not be reliable I had to move on to something else.
