I am still learning with the D70....What is the difference between Auto and P mode. Does auto just set white balance and focus point automatically? Should I be using one over the other?

P allows for some customization. it will give you a base exposure, and you can alter it to change the DOF. it also won't auto pop up the flash and some other auto settings.

If you don't feel like using M/AV/TV, then use P. If you are handing it off to somebody that doesn't know what the hell they are doing at all, use Auto

I never suggest shooting in Auto because then you never really learn whats going on inside the camera. I usually shoot in P and occassionally shoot in S or A, depending on the situation. The "scenes" are worthless for the most part so just stay away from those all together.

and to answer your question, Auto mode decides the shutter, aperture, focal point, ISO and whether to use the flash or not. P just does shutter and aperture.
