Decided I'd get in on the school newspaper so I have some more subjects to photograph and can get more practice.

Summer assignments are pretty boring it seems but in the fall I should hopefully get some on field passes for football games, etc.

My assignments today were some tunnel that is closing and a new building we bought off campus. I wasn't thrilled with any of my shots but here's what I got.

the problem with newspapers is that the reproduction on newsprint sucks ass. so you might as well just take a p&s and take pics

I'm just doing it for fun/ experience. 99% of the people who read the paper could care a less about the image quality.

NO, by no means am I telling you you suck. I'm saying, they look at who you shoot for, not how good your shots are. I can give you prime examples of SHIT photos media people take, and only got to shoot it because of their employee ID.

Love my 10-20mm... use a tripod to even it out when you're taking pics of buildings and such. It won't barrel the edges. :o

PS - shooting for the school sounds fun....

Go back and re-shoot the tunnel, but lay down in the middle of the walkway.

I shot/shoot for a few school papers and love it. I also write and was EIC last year which was awesome/stressful. One thing I can tell you about those photos is I personally would not run them and/or tell you to re-shoot. They have no people. Even if you had one person walking in either they would be better.

People make good, attention grabbing photos. And "if you're photos aren't good enough, you're not close enough."

Also, as mentioned before. News print does kind of suck the life out of some photos. CMYK sucks and the dot gain can make everything look oof. So you really need a great, close photo to look good especially since most of your photos will probably run small and in grayscale on some middle section. The one cool thing about news paper and how it prints is that the dot gain will hide almost all evidence of noise, therefore always shoot at the the shutter speed/aperture that you NEED not just what you are willing sacrifice to for low noise shots. I used to shoot all the time at 1600-3200 on 20 and 30ds, over expose about 1/2 stop and never saw noisy photos.

Good luck to ya. It's a lot of fun.

I think you should take some from inside the tunnel :dunno:

I like the second building shot.

thanks for the tips, i did shoot a lot more than what i posted, i gave them about 13 pictures for each, so hopefully they will find something good. they are shot at 12.3 mp so if i'm not close enough hopefully they can zoom/ crop to their likings.

thanks for the tip on the noise though, that will come in handy i'm sure. :bigok:

I think #2 and #4 are great. They look like journalism photos and will be just fine for the paper.
