So my friend decided to get his car washed and wanted some pictures of it. I had my gear with me so we went for it. Shooting black cars is really really hard when you dont have the right location. Time was running out we didnt have much of a location but we made do. Only had about 25min before we got booted. :(

Now my questions, i have read some strobist stuff, and i know about direct reflection and difused reflection. But i tried the family of angles to attempt to avoid the specular highlights in the car, but i think black at that time is pretty much unavoidable right? Unless i were to move the light super close to the car and turned the power down? Or would a large difuser help more making the light source larger.

Now in an ideal situation i would have put the car to the sunset getting some rim lighting toward the back but no time :(

lights were set up pass side front quarter panel, driver side quarter panel and dr side rear quarter panel. bare strobes.

please give me feed back be as brutal as you want, its how i learn.

definitely diffusers, er huge gigantic diffusers are needed. you want large light sources, not small hot spots :hs:

yeah next time around i think im gonna try to paint it with one strobe and a huge softbox. and just use a 4 stop ND filter to help me kill ambient and buy me more exposure time. Black is hard cause its so damn reflective.

that's all i wanted to say. those pics are partially ruined by the shitty paint, black cars need more love before being photographed.

It looks like it was still pretty light out - you need to work on overpowering the sunlight more - you didn't quite get the effect that you wanted (at least I think) - stop down and power the flashes up more.
