Any pointers? I'll have my tripod, 40D, Sigma 10-20, Canon 28-135, and flash.

First time I've shot one of these. I'll set the white balance before the cars come, and I'm trying to get to each stage with enough time to get a decent shooting position. I may go to the night session on friday, but I dunno about using a flash when they are racing. Seems like an asshole move.

practice panning with motion effect, or very high speed with close ups (i.e. gravel flying from the tire)

there are so many shots you can do as the cars leave one by one, so normally only one car comes every minute or so, plenty of time to adjust.

28-135 will be on most of the time. The 10-20 will only come out for the in-the-pits photos...

yeah don't use flash, go during the day if you want shots to keep. put it on af-c, start usually around 1/125 panning and go slower if you're comfortable doing so. it also depends on 3/4 car, side shot, etc, but just play with it and have fun.

Yeah make sure you're okay to use flash. Ive never shot rally but at the track theyre not happy for speedlights as it distracts drivers.

how good are you with panning? i'm still learning to not blow at it. cars are easier than bikes though. cars don't have moving legs/arms/heads

Go shutter priority and try shutter speeds between 1/30-1/60 depending how far cars are from you. Just try to hold the focus point on a spot. It's a total spray and pray, but cool if you nail a few.

and shoot a pan at f/4-f/5.6 DOF doesn't mean shit since it will all blur anyway. shot the bikes at f/4 or so to give me some room on the focus that will surely be questionable as they scream by

Should have said something sooner. I have a Tamron 70-200 I could have shipped up there for you to borrow.

Not really that much use right now since it is so flipping cold I only step outside to run to the truck.

in rallies, you can actually touch the car if you just extend your arms

at least here in the rockies it's that close to the action... if a car spins out, better move out.

13 and 15 have a whole lot of win potential in them, just needs some adjustments in pp... but the set as a whole seems a bit flat. Looks like it was a lot of fun though.
