So i want to use some gels to get different colored backgrounds, but light the dude without gels. Do i need to flag the key so as not to kill the gel'd background fill light, or maybe use a grid on him?

Depends on the depth of your studio. If you can move your dude far enough away from the background you'll be fine without flags. If the key is killing the colored background, flag it.

exactly what Jcolman says, you gotta think about if you have enough distance to light two planes

also another thing to think about it, is your Key/Main light directional enough not to bleed into the background.

Thanks guys, that answered my question. the studio is deep enough that I can move him away from teh background so I don't think I'll have to flag my key. My first time shooting a dude too, LOL. He wants to webcast it live via his blog with a webcam
