I am very active during the week, playing some sport 4 days out of the week and lifting on most other days. For the past month I have been getting incredible shin splints mid week. Is there anything I can do to avoid them i.e. particular stretching, taking potassium supplement etc.?

buy better running shoes that are fitted to your foot/arch type. See a specialty running store to get fitted.

Oh and search for a few of the past threads here, you might get some links to help you out...

realllllllllllllly stretch your calves. worked wonders for me. a good 10 minutes of calf stretching before your run.

I have it too, I've been told to do toe raises to work that muscle, to stop doing calf raises for a while, and to let them rest in general for a few weeks.

I also forgot to mention I have very flat feet. I also wear cleats in most of the sports I play, soccer, softball, flag football, etc. Thanks for the stretching guide. That combined with taking it easy for a few weeks will hopefully work :x:

getting better fitting shoes helps the most with shin splints, atleast in my experience. having flat footed shoes caused my shin splints.
