Depends on what you want. Obviously every situation will be different, but using a faster shutter speed and freezing the light is not a cool as getting some movement of the light IMO. When I say long I'm referring to half second to 2 or 3 seconds.

Mine are all around f/10 with 2-3 second exposures.

Besides the obvious, the only advice I can give you is to base your exposure time on the movement of the smoke. If its humid with no breeze, your pics are going to look like shit with a longer exposure (From teh smoke). Hope for wind, and hope the spot you picked to shoot from is up wind.

I'm giving fireworks photography my first go tonight. I have been reading up and the advice posted here seems to be about on par with everything I've read.

Most key thing is finding a spot away from bright street lights and shit, and in a big city, that's a bit tough. I'm probably going to have to leave right after dinner to get a decent spot.

    !!!!Composite Image!!!!

So - I got what I was going for here witth a composite. I wanted a view where I could see:
    - central stage with the Bellevue Philharmonic on it
    - the crowd
    - the big tree in the park to help frame where I was in the park
    - mulitiple colors of fireworks

So - this is hand tweaked in photoshop. It combines the explosions from multiple frames...
    1) crowd is one frame
    2) stage is another frame.
    3) sky is another frame
    4) fireworks in red on the bottom and those touching it are one frame (link to that)
    5) fireworks in red on middle right are another frame
    6) fireworks on upper right in purple and white are another frame
    7) firewroks on upper left are another frame

then some difference masking, 17 layers of gradient applied curves, some burning tool application and a couple magic wands followed by the delete key - the magic happened.

To be honest - this is how I remember the night - not the individual frames but a big blur of realy impressive fireworks - so it's one of the few times I'm alright with a "photo illustration".

First time shooting fireworks, be gentle. some are a bit grainy. I kind of liked the first one, thought it was like a spaceship or something

Haven't had time to do any PP, so they are straight out of the camera (except for the first one that I blacked out a cell phone)
