shopping for tripods and came across the bogen 190xprob. i kept reading about the horizontal center column but couldn't find a pic and wanted to see it in action...it gets good around 0:45.

i was skeptical about the grip-action ballheads, but it doesn't look too bad in this vid.

    anyone have either of these?

:werd: That does look like a bad ass tripod. I'm still using one from the 70's :o

get a 190 (3001) or even the slightly bigger 055 (3021). I use a 055prob and the new column on x versions looks so much smarter and faster than the old way of doing it.

I've played around with some of those grip action ball heads in my local photo store, and they're pretty sweet. Easy to adjust, holds well, but it's just to damn bulky and big IMO.

Bulky as in would probably get snagged on something throwing it in, or taking it out of my car.

these aren't very stable. if your camera is anywhere but the center of the tripod, stability is compromised. if you can, avoid a center column completely. i always laugh when i see people shooting with the center column fully extended two feet.

get a gitzo and a markins or really right stuff ballhead + clamp.

They just made that into a carbon fiber model too, new for this year. It's called the 190cx

hmm, just browsing adorama and bh it looks like the gitzo's are out of my price range. i'm looking at around $200 for both the legs and head, gitzo seems to be twice that at least for just the legs.
