Last wedding I did w/ off camera ligting, I used the SB800 on D700 and the pop up on the D300 to trigger 2 flashes (SB800 and SB600), my buddy used his SU800. When I had to shoot group shots, I had to fumble and take the SB800 out of commander mode, adjust the power (when need be), shoot, and go back into Commander again when done. Meanwhile, the popup on the D300 kept getting caught up in my suit jacket and I almost broke it once or twice.

Afterward, I decided to get another flash... and I was on the fence w/ the SU800. After thinking about it, it just made sense to have it vs. the pop up or PWs. I can control the flash, have the SB800 on the D300 w/ the wide angle and not have to worry about switching or breaking my dinky pop up. Its great to have the pop up, just don't think its good to have it in a hustle and bustle environment of a wedding. The SU mounts like a flash, feels like a flash, and I can adjust it on the fly rather than adjusting in camera and looking for the menu and the buttons, etc. Just seems a little easier. At the same time, if I wanted to use the Alien Bee for something... I could just pop a PW on it and keep the other in my jacket pocket. Not to mention at $250, its not exactly expensive compared to my flashes or cameras. A sound investment... and a good little unit, I think. :o

    And D300...

I suppose the only reason is just to have ZERO flash coming from the camera?

thats cool, keeping things simple is definitely worth it, especially in a hectic environment.

I'm sure D300 has a "--" option which outputs no flash. It only fires the preflash, if you haven't FV locked.

yes, you can set the master to "--" on the 300.

I'm personally a fan of triggers though and would rather hook my flashes to a PW and fire it with a PW:wiggle:
