Whats the best set top box that can work with any music, movies, etc? Movie rental possibility a plus. Music purchase integration a plus.

I currently have 250GB of music hooked to a mac mini but... its in the wrong room. I'm thinking about getting AppleTV to get the music to the den, on the TV and to the stereo. But there must be a free/cheaper alternative out there?

Windows MCE is the most powerful, imo.... Especially if you have a 1080P display.

However there are many open source / free implementations (such as MythTV)

Or you could write your own.

are you interested in a hackable device or something that just works out of the box? i've heard good things about hacking an AppleTV, though i don't know how it works with rentals and shit after that.

I just want somethign that gives me good access to all my media on the TV/stereo. I don't care about hackable if it has good features.

MythTV, thats the one I was thinking of!

And what would be good hardware for mythtv that can plug right into TV/Stereo?

minimum P4 2.4GHz for smooth operation.

Hauppauge PVR-150/250/350 are the recommended tuners.

256MB memory is min per encoder. RAM is cheap, get 2GB.

XFS or JFS is recommended for DVR use. ext3 is NOT recommended. ReiserFS actuall results in corrupt recordings :)rofl:)

Any modern nVidia card would be best for output. Don't use an ATi card if you don't want a VERY FRUSTRATING exerpience.

For sound I'd go with the M-Audio Revolution 5.1/7.1 or a Delta 44/66 depending on your needs.

Yeah but I need it to sit on the TV shelf. Is there a small form factor box that would work well?

do you have a traditional component stereo system? If so, Silverstone makes a number of cases that perfectly blend-in with your home theater.

yea the cost is a bit steep, i will admit.

they are EXCELLENT cases, however, very quiet, and purpose-built and generally include a psu (and silverstone psus are supurb)
