Here's a question: A commodity 2U server with 2 processors, 4 cores each and 8 drive pays. The filesystem is streamlined for fast streaming. 7200 RPM disks, each one can stream 70-80MB/sec. Can a typical server hard drive controller handle getting the full 70-80MB/disk to all 8 cores, from all 8 drives, assuming the read is evenly distributed and in big fat stripes? Or do you have to buy a really beefy server, with independent controllers for each disk, to be able to do that?
