can someone recommend a server based IM solution for a small company? at the moment we are using AIM but it's not very good because everytime a employee starts/leaves we have to get EVERYONE in the office to add them to their contact list, making it very very cumbersome.

i'm looking for a IM where we can store contact lists AND users on a central server and have the program poll from the server.

any kind of client/server based IM solution wont be free...i dont know what your company does..but software companies will give it to you free if you sign some kind or partnership with them..or you help them develop new API's

If you have Exchange, Microsoft has MSChat server included. Mostlikely it wasn't installed with Exchange, but its on the Exchange CD and is very easy to install. It requires the MSChat client to be installed, and that is on the CD as well. Don't know if its your goal or not, but it won't connect to other public IM servers (this could be a good or bad thing depending on what you need to do).
