So I'm lifting today and I ask a guy to spot me on my final set. He was working in with some other guy I recently asked for a spot so I figured he'd know what the fuck was going on. I knew things were going to be bad when he puts his belt on and cinches it tight before he gets ready to spot me. I tell him, "I just want a lift off.. please don't help unless it crushes me or I ask for it." He gives me a lift off and then keeps his hands on the bar and it felt too light so he was obviously helping. The whole time he is yelling cliche' lines like "Get some big air" "You got it!" "All you!". Now I know its all well intentioned but god damn...

Usually people are good enough not to touch the bar and just follow it up and down but this guy was a fucking clown.

i've found most people like to hold onto the bar or hold onto your arms if you're doing dumbell presses even if you blatantly ask for just a lift off

I blatantly tell people not to touch the bar until it starts dipping.

Also when giving spots I forewarn them that I give real light spots.

I'm not one who likes to get yelled at when getting a spot either.

When I ask for a spot I always tell them that once they give me the hand off they should not be anywhere near the bar. I also tell them that it should be crushing my chest before they even attempt to help get it off me. I am not asking for help... I am asking for someone to watch incase I get myself into trouble. Nobody ever listens though.

I like it when my spotter gives me some motivation, if I know the guy. But I fuggin hate spots that are like tag-team lifting.

It sure felt light. The weight is normally a heavy single and I wanted to go for a double but instead got a triple. If its mind over matter then rock on.. but I don't know.

If I'm struggling to lockout I don't mind someone shouting at me but if I'm repping weight without much trouble and just asked for a spot incase I run out of gas.. please don't yell at me.

I've had it all. From guys yelling "Light Weight" to guys who lift half of the weight for you. It's not that bad though, he could just tell you to go fuck yourself when you ask for a spot.

All thought middle school and high school we were always taught that you help with the lift off then keep your fingers under the bar just in case but to give no help unless they are going really heavy (just safty precaution there). I always though this was common knowledge to anyone that lifted. Guess I was wrong.

The exclamations of "big air!" and such were actually directed toward himself, as he was curling the bar simultaneously as you benched it. I bet his biceps are enormous after that workout.

Yeah, I can only imagine how it looked. Dude with a shaved head wearing a belt (cinched nice and tight) spotting my bench while yelling for no reason.

Just what I was taught in school, maybe they made us do that for liability reasons, who knows. I still do it but I mean I dont touch the bar I keep my fingers about an inch under it.

Thats totally fine. I don't mind if people follow the bar and unless specified otherwise I will usually follow the bar a few inches below if spotting a stranger.
