So I was helping my buddy reformat his computer. I had my external harddrive pluged into his. Booted from CD and for some reason the only hard drive showing on the Windows Setup was the external, and I didn't realize.

So I deleted the partion and attempted to install a new partion on it, but it wouldnt let me. So thankfully, I didn't format it. Is there any way to reapply the partion and access the data again?

    Cliffs:I fucked up, big time.

    you need file recovery software.
Although I've never used it, http://www.recuva.com/ is made by the same people who make CCleaner, which IMO is a fantastic program and it's free. You can give that a shot. For pay software, I've used some of the stuff from R-Studio, and for the most part it did what I needed, but had issues with files over 100mb or so,

If all you did is delete the partition but stopped before you formatted, then it should be an easy recovery for most hard drive recovery programs.
You should be able to just fix the partition.

see what happened was, i deleted it, then i created a new partition, but didnt format it.

then i got some advice to use "partition magic", at which point i deleted the partition, so it was all "unallocated space" and then ran the "partition undelete tool" without any success... i think at this point i should just stop fucking with it and take it to a computer place... at this point im willing to spend some money to recover what was on there

Well as long as you didn't format it, everything is still there.

So recovery software could still pull it all off even if it can't repair the partition.

It can be a ton of work to sift through everything though.
