I'm in the market for a Sport Compact Car. Ideally, I'm looking for something with these requirements.

    • Seats 4/5
    • Manual Transmission
    • Four Doors Preferrably
    • > 150 HP
    • Fun to drive, handles well
I'm looking for something relatively new, that I can score for less than 15 grand. The Sentra S-ER Spec V looks like my best bet right now, but I'm a good shopper. Does anyone have suggestions?

You can find a good used WRX for that price. Didnt they come with a 4 door wagon? Or were those only 2 doors...

I like all of those options, except for the power part. Frankly, almost all the cars you mentioned are GUTLESS.

WRXs are the most overpriced cars on the market right now, and even 2002s with 50k on them are bringing $20k.

The Sentra S-ER Spec V I was looking at has 18,000 miles, and is 11,100. Obviously I'm never going to find a WRX in that condition for that price.

    Edit: 2.5 RS, comparable?

the 2.5RS makes 165hp and as much torque. The AWD is cool too.
The 1.8t VWs aren't bad at all and a chip will give you a much welcome boost in HP. Turbo's are fun!
The Protege's and Protege5 make something like 134hp. Not too bad and when coupled with a manual tranny, will give adequate performance. We aren't talking about muscular cars here. I consider the entire class you named to be gutless...and I drive a 2.slow GTI.

It's possible to find a Mazdaspeed Protege for $15k. The na Protege ES/P5 is great fun as well though. Don't be deceived by the hp numbers, just go drive one, you'll understand.

See if you can find a Lancer Ralliart sedan. I really liked that car. The '04 model has gone down quite a bit in price (original msrp ~19k), which is sort of a good and bad thing.

Impreza 2.5RS is a good car if the AWD interests you. Should be easy to find an '02-03 inside your budget. A $15k WRX worth buying will be tough to find.

Recent Corollas are pretty dull. Civics are alright, but the Protege is better.

i don't know about that. most GOOD wrx's i see are priced much higher than what I'm asking for mine. you can definitely find a beat up one for $15K though. or you can find a nice one for $17-20K: http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/showthread.php?t=113925 (mine)

i used to have a sentra spec-v (an '03) and it wasn't a bad car, but there's no real potential for making more power. i bought it because it was the right price and i loved the hlsd. sold it for the wrx

what i would do in that case is find a mk3 (90's) vw for around $3-6K. dont spend too much money on a car right now - better things will come your way soon enough, and your money can be spent on much better things than a car payment. think concerts, dates, road trips, save it for college, etc. i was your age and didnt want to hear that, but now i'm 27 and would give anything to go back and make myself buy a good reliable beater. i spent way too much $$ on cars back then and had nothing to show for it at the end of the day

At your age, don't bury yourself in a car payment.

Truth be told, you'd be better off buying a reliable beater even if it doesn't make gobs of power. You aren't looking at powerful machines anyway nor should you be.
Fast cars and teenagers don't mix.

Go find a late 90's Subie and drive that bitch till it dies.

    • Seats 4/5 (technically, it does)
    • Manual Transmission (can't get one withoout it)
    • Four Doors Preferrably (it's not)
    • > 150 HP (it is)
    • Fun to drive, handles well (it is and it does)
It fairly well meets your criteria. No, it's not the fastest car in the world. I like it for what it is.

I'm actually gonna be gettin a sentra se-r spec v 2004 later today. I really like those cars, as illeagle94 said they are not the fastest car in the worlt or the fastest car in the price range. But they are a really good buy. I love the torque in the car, the only real complaint on the car that I have is that the 6 spd shifter on the car isnt exactly the most precise tranny in the world when it comes to shifting but its good enough for me. good luck with your decision.

I have an 02 spec-v. The 6spd tranny is indestructable, the lsd is awesome, the interior is nice too. Stock the spec isnt much to gook at, but with a couple mods its an srt4 slayer. On mine i have a dc header/dp, 2.5 ss exhaust, aem intake, motor mounts, nitrous xpress wet kit (75shot), and i have a set of jwt cams coming in. With that and a decent tune i should be able to ahve some fun, untuned with nitrous and exhaust i walked an 02 m/t stang multiple times from a stop and a roll. Its still not as fast as my dsm, way more reliable though. If you want some opinions or facts hit up www.thevboard.com and www.b15sentra.net

what he said specV isn't too bad. don't get an early 02 though, late 02-05 are the way to go.

that guy said they don't make a lotta power probably never modded it, n/a they're pretty decent. not a huge aftermarket but enough to get u some decent power outta the car.

    u don't walk anybody w/ a turbo unless u are f/i or nitrous

vw's are horrible when it comes to reliability. the worst in the industry

i bought my '02 w/ 36k at the end of jan 04 for 11k btw.

Uh... the 04+ lancer rallysports with the mivec 2.4 run 14's stock at the tracks around here. Of course, thats not exactly the way you get it to last a long time ;) :hsugh:

    Thats not exactly gutless.
