    From another forum...

I fired off an email to Reid. My other representative was a cosigner. Time to get the emails going.

You know as an Illinois resident I really want something like that for obvious reasons, but I do tend to think ccw should remain a states right issue at the same time...

    that would be the idea

edit: though actually it looks more like it would make a federal standard for CCW holders, so we may all have to take the class again.

:greddy: You know how federal standards are. The class you took is probably 11ty times tougher than any fed class would be.

I think states would still get to decide if they issue CCWs as well as the requirements for said license. If they don't issue them, then there is a standard set of rules CCW holders would have to follow when they are in those states.

Yeah, but this bill makes it legal for a CCWer to carry in any state...does not say it would require all states to be Shall Issue. I think it's a great idea personally.

Don't get me wrong, I have out of state permits and could carry in Illinois then, but effectively you're circumventing the states ability to legislate itself in that fashion. If the voters of a state have chosen their concealed carry laws, it seems to be a violation of states rights to say tough people get to carry there anyway. At least until the 2nd amendment is incorporated as it should be.

Couldn't it be argued that this is one step closer to having it incorporated as it should be? If we all believe that the second amendment is exactly what it is, there wouldn't be a question of whether or not a state should have the choice.

Well if it were incorporated the need for a permit, testing, fees, fingerprinting and other things that generally wind up with you being treated like a criminal should go right out the window... Until then though it just seems like something though should be outside federal power even if I'd benefit from it.

It's a good bill, but it will never get out of committee.

The anti-gun crazies like Feinstein/Clinton/etc would fight like crazy and probably filibuster it, and most of the spineless Republicans wouldn't do anything about it.

It just doesn't seem like, right now, getting rid of all those things is plausible. Instead of saying "all or none" we should try doing it one step at a time. They could always go the voluntary route; "You don't have to follow this, but we'll give you money if you do."
