Am I insane? I love my truck. It loves me. But I'll be doing a lot of cross country driving in the near future and also want something more spouse/kid/dog friendly than my Blazer that doesn't have A/C or carpet.

I'm also having a hell of a time finding a 4 cyl. manual Cherokee. It seems to be a rare and non existant breed. Did they even exist in the 98+ years?

I did a similar change. But it was a fullsize 2 door Cherokee to an XJ Cherokee.

Why the fuck do you want a 4cyl Cherokee? The 4.0L is bulletproof and is going to work a shit ton less than that 4banger is to move the Jeep. I've got a 4.0/manual 4x4 and its a great setup.

4cyl XJ's are rare in general, unless we're talking the pre 4.0 era.

You'll get just as good with a 4.0, I promise.

Per Edmunds, specs for a 94 Cherokee:

    4cyl/5spd/2wd: 19/22
    6cyl/5spd/2wd: 17/22
    4cyl/5spd/4wd: 19/22
    6cyl/5spd/4wd: 16/20

Keep in mind you'll be flogging the shit out of that 4cyl to get any acceleration, which will destroy your mpg.

I have a 1997 6cyl Auto. I get about 15/20...I know some people who have had the 4cyl and they actually get WORSE mileage than the 6cyl. check out jeepforum. There are tons of threads about this stuff...also, heres the jeepwiki on the XJ's http://www.jeepforum.com/wiki/index.php/XJ_Cherokee

i went from a K5(12mpg) to a grand cherokee(16mpg). Fuck the top on the K5 is heavy. I tore the living shit out of that thing though.

Yeah I want to stay away from the grand cherokee. My old neighbor had one and it made a habit of crapping out. It made my K5 look dependable.

The GC is a very reliable vehicle when you have the 4.0

Don't even bother with the 4 cyl. You'll get close to the same mileage with the 6, and you'll probably actually "enjoy" driving it.

"Sold" the truck today. The guy drove it to the state line and the front driveshaft broke. He dumps it off at a truck stop and sends me a text message that he doesn't want it anymore. WTC. I went, unbolted the driveshaft and drove it home. Pissed. Anyone want this fucking heap before I burn it in a field?

:werd: If he didn't ask to have it inspected by a mechanic (at his expense) then he bought whatever troubles that vehicle has. If you say AS-IS then thats the end of it.

4.0 + Stick (unless its an 87-89 with the Peugot tranny)= FTW

Jeeps are very solid mechanically. Yes, they'll squeak and rattle, have problems with old power windows, locks, and a/c, but they run forever.
