Selling my computer, need some help.

Discussion in 'OT Technology' started by Carson_Kressley, Nov 1, 2004.

  1. How I do clean it up to get all my information off of the computer?

The HD used to have Windows 98 SE but then I upgraded to WIN XP Home. I have no idea where the win WIN98 SE disc is but I still have the upgrade. What can I do?

I'm thinking I have to reformat the computer?

This link will give you more links to where you can download utility to low leverl format your HD.

A simple format won't do it, pretty much everything can be recovered via professional tools.

In fact it is even possible to recover data from a drive after its been low level formatted. It will be pretty difficult, but still possible. This will require a lot more skill and sophiciated tools to do so.

To really make sure that you completely erased the data on the drive. You can use special utilities that will write random stuff over the whole drive for multiple of time (usually 5-25 times). After that, you can then perform a low leverl format. That way, you will be pretty much covered. In order to do this, it is better if you have a seperate computer to do it. Or you can use something like Knoppix, FIRE, if you got lots of RAM.

Why not? Just write 0's to it and call it good enough (unless you're trying to hide something from the FBI...in which case your screwed anyways).

There are more serious stuff than that... I couldn't careless if some dude get busted for child porn... They can go DIAF...

However, I would care a lot... if somebody sells his old computer and my credit card infomation/medical record...etc. are on it... This is not too far fetched actually... Studies had been done, and you will be suprised by what you can find from old hard drives that you can get from liquidation stores... :eek3:

I have Norton Systemworks and it has an WipeInfo function that has a Government level erase. I use that once in awhile to erase crap.
