Ok so I just started shooting sports and I got to practice at my little cousin's basketball tournament. The parents were notified I would be there and that they could purchase the photos online later. I sold 2 different sets of prints right now. Today I got an e-mail from a parent asking if I only sold the prints or if I would send the digital files via e-mail. I understand that most people do not sell prints and I don't want to either, what would be the best way to tell him this politely and give him solid reasons as to why I don't. Thanks.

Something about only selling prints to protect yourself and your work?

how likely are these files to be of any value to anyone but these parents?

how many prints are they likely to buy of the file?

charge them that amount, or the amount + 1

the files aren't going to be worth anything more to you than this

they probably just want the pictures to give out to family.

You can either sell him the print, then they'll go to Ritz and scan / print it themselves, or you can sell them the file for a fixed price and just forget about it. I would sell the file for $6-12 each, which is a price most parents can stomach.

how much are they worth to you ?

are the photos any good ?

how much time did you spend ?

how much are you looking to get ?

$50 for a set of photos that are nothing special would be $50 more than you would have otherwise

For something like that, sure sell it to them.

However, I'd sell it at like 5x what a regular 8x10 might go for. Tell them the reason is that it allows them to make unlimited amount of prints and is therefore worth more than just a single print. If they really only want a few prints made, its then less expensive for them to do it through you than buy the file. If they want to make them for the entire family, its better to buy the file and you get a decent price for it. If they need 15 prints, they arent likely to buy all from you, but for the price of 5, its worth it to them to buy the file.
