Going to sell a shotgun & rifle, never done this before. Anything special I need to do as far as serial number, bill of sale, etc to protect myself?

Not sure about the shotgun and rifle but I sold a baby eagle 9mm a couple months ago and was told I really didnt need to have anything done to complete the sale in Texas(told this by the local gun store). But to cover your ass I would complete a bill of sale for insurance and law enforcement reasons. The one I drew up had mine and the buyers contact info...along with some fine print saying I was not responsible for this weapon any more and yadda yadda. He and I both signed it. Filed it away in the cabinet for keeping. Thats about all I know.

Just a private sale you don't have to worry. Just be sure the person is of age for the firearm and can legally own one, isn't intoxicated at the time of purchase etc etc..

One thing I always take into account is gtting all of their drivers license info, serial number, make, model, and date of which said gun is sold. Just for safety in your records.

Make sure they can legally own a gun; make a bill of sale; photocopies of everything.

Is there a way for me to find out if they are allowed to own one? (ie them being a felon).

There maybe some online services you can pay for.

If you feel any doubt, maybe best to have an FFL do the transfer and find out and be rest assured that way.
