what do you want to know? There is plenty of documentation out there. http://www.openssl.org/ is a good site. Look under "documents".

would these protocols been considered security mechanisms?
    key generation
    ssl handshake
    ssl changecipherspec protocol

    ssl alert protocol

i'm not sure that i know what you mean when you say "mechanisms". Are you talking about the properties of SSL and what it does for security? or what? Is this for a paper or something?

How about you ask your professor to clarify? He should be able to answer your questions.

I'm pretty sure your professor would want you to talk about more than just the protocols... do some reasearch.. actually look into what SSL actually is, and why it's good.

Yes, that is most likely what he is looking for. I'm quite familiar with both of the layers of protocols in SSL. If you have specific questions, feel free to ask. Use Google to find the websites with general information first.

Sounds like you need to learn the basics of cryptography and security before you delve into specific mechanisms of a protocol.
