I'm filling out paperwork for my security clearance. At one point it asks if I ever had counseling for alcohol abuse. I've been written up at school for alcohol and they make you attend a mandatory alcohol class. I've never gotten in any legal trouble or any other counseling other than that. Is that something I need to put on the form anyways?

hmm. yeah i would put it. if it pops up and you said no that will fuck you out of the clearance most likely. but being honest about it most likely won't. main thing they look for is being honest and not being in debt a lot from what i have been told...

Yea, I'm going to put it on. Is this something that will affect me being approved?

You will get asked about it during your interview more than likely. As long as it wasnt a terrible incident and you show that you dont have any big problems with it you should be fine

I'm in ROTC. During the junior year, they require all cadets to be approved for a security clearance.

it's hard to say. they look for various shit in clearance so see how easily a spy or whoever can get to you. they look for honesty which is common sense. they look for if you got debt problems (spy can pay you) and i would imagine they do look at alcohol related instances (spy can get you drunk easy and you talk)...

Debt problems and any criminal problems are deal breakers right now.

I have never been charged criminally. If I smoked Marijuana a total of 6 times and the last time was 2/2008, will that get me rejected from the clearance?

its not a criminal thing. also its most likely a secret level clearance so 9/10 times you wont get interviewed.

choose your references well and prep them on what to say in case you are one of the people that has their references contacted. if interviewed and asked directly, you can say you took it to mean judge mandated offenses in the court of law, not a school policy. say you left it out because you want to discuss it personally.

i did that for my TS-SCI and it was pertaining to places i lived. i left out my study abroad mainly because the online epsq sucks and the error checking codes made my entries "invalid"...i brought it up during my interview when asked about places i lived/studied. told her about the problems with the form online and then offered the names, addresses and numbers of people that can verify i studied abroad.

it took the clearance a little longer to process but its all an integrity check. if i were in your situation i would not list it and wait to be asked. its a vague question and you can take the legal route because that is the route that matters. if this is a school policy thing then that can be disputed

list the drug thing, i knew people that got Q level clearances and they dabbled with marijuana a few times. i think the epsq asks if you have used it within the last 6 months or something very short term

edit: i have my TS-SCI, remember your overall character is assessed as well.

I looked more into it and there is no interview. I do not want to put the school alcohol write up in because it's just from the school, not from the actual legal system, but I feel like I should. I gotta put the marijuana in because I took a police background check a couple years ago and that is on my record that I've smoked before.

since there is no interview, leave that shit out. just pick your references well and even prep them on further approved references to mention. sometimes they like to spider out. my TS took forever because i was a nerd in college and didnt have many friends, so they couldnt search too far on me

if they find something that does not add up or if they get conflicting info, they will contact you to clear it up

but yes definitely mention the marijuana thing, they are usually very lenient on it...unless of course you were a complete pothead

secret level clearance is really nothing to worry about. it can take anywhere from 6 months or 4 years to complete, depending on how lazy they act (i had an interim secret all the way until my promotion to CPT)

Put it down. its a one time minor offense. Its not going to hurt you. I Had PFCs that had financial issues and drug or alcohol offenses that still hold a secret clearance.

They ask: "Have you ever been arrested?" Not: "Have you ever been charged?" There is a huge difference. Write the correct answer, and they will ask you about it. No worries if you haven't been charged.

This is exactly what it says.

Has your use of alcohol had a negative impact on your work performance, your professional or personal relationships, your finances, or resulted in intervention by law enforcement/safety personnel?

Have you ever been ordered, advised, or asked to seek counseling or treatment as a result of your alcohol?

Have you received counseling or treatment as a result of your alcohol?

It is kind of a test to see if you will be honest. Just be glad you don't have to do a polygraph.

Just recently redid mine. This time just Secret instead of TS/SCI -no polygraph(what I needed when I was AD). I was totally honest. Put stuff I didn't want too.
