I have a buddy that wants to put a security camera and speaker at the end of his driveway. Aprrox. 1200ft. from his house.

He wants to be able to view the camera via the internet. What kind of cable can go this distance? I know Cat 5 for Data is limited to 330ft. w/o a repeater. Would this apply since its just video? Is there another cable that would be better suited for this type of apllicataion?

    Thanks.

Depends on the equipment, environment, etc.

There are a lot of factors. He could go fiber, but it would get expensive.

Typically long runs (several hundred feet or longer) require higher quality cables. Typically if I'm designing a system over 1500ft, its fiber.

    RG59 Coax - 750FT
    RG6 Coax - 1500FT (CATV)
    RG11 Coax - 1800FT (CATV)

First step would be to find the equipment he wants to use that offers either IP addressable cameras or an IP addressable DVR (cheaper option). Then he can contact the camera manufacturer and request their specifications for long CCTV runs.

Thanks DatacomGuy -- I'll pass that along. If the RG6 is used can it do the voice and video so it can be viewed on the net? Thanks Again!

Depends on the camera and its requirements. Every camera manufacturer is different.

Tell him to research the camera options and post up what he's looking at, and we'll review with you
