I have just started to look for chat / instant messanger programs that utilize high amounts of encryption and preferabbly use an IP to IP setup. Lord knows AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, all major IRC network are watched, I know AIM and ICQ convos are logged by AOL. To be honest I would also rather use a product that is free, open source, and doesn't work through something else other than IP to IP messages. Would be very nice if said program would allow or require usage of preshared keys as well as public / private, had a great support for multiple algorithoms(mabey even used multiple algorithms with multiple keys in a tunnel).

any ideas? I haven't yet found a thing.

Jabber is server based, but you can roll your own server if you are that paranoid. Plus it is open source are there are tons of plugins that will allow you to add encryption and what not. I think the client might have encryption built in. :dunno:

O DEAR LORD, you have to be kidding me, Trillian while it does have secure IM uses a fixed bit for the encryption key, to dumb this down, lets say you had 10 keys that worked for your house right? now lets say that part of the key (the little things that poke out) was the EXACT same on not only your 10 keys, but every key for that kind of lock. Someone or anyone for that matter that had an idea what they are doing could EASILY get through that lock. Well thats what trillian did with their encryption, why I have no idea I personally find it pretty damn stupid.

Trillian secure IM is not secure, actually the trillian client all togather has ALOT of exploits for it. Me and some friends a long time ago (trillian 1.0 days) were knocking a test setup of trillian down repeatedly with overflows (buffer primarily if I recall correctly).

    TRILLIAN IS NOT SECURE lc

just want to get the point across, and yea GAIM is better.

I don't deal in Top-Secret nuclear codes so MSN messenger suits me just fine, Trillian at work.

I run an irc server for myself and my friends. Everything is secure since the server only allows connections from local clients.

No, I said the irc server only allows local clients. Everyone connects to the server using ssh, the communication is all local through UNIX sockets.

Have you looked into ssl-enabled ircds/clients?
