I received an SD940 for Christmas..

I know I shouldn't expect much from a pocket camera this small, but the picture quality is really really disappointing. Does anyone else have experience with one?

It's basically a slightly-upgraded SD780.. so does anyone here have one of those to compare?

I wouldn't really mind if the 720p video quality was great.. but it isn't.

Well after looking through the online Knowledge Base, my camera might have a few issues that they say require service to be corrected.

It's a neat toy, but wholly unnecessary.. might just investigate the return route instead of dealing with Canon repairs

Looks really shitty. My 2 & ½ year old Canon IXUS something takes way sharper & clearer pics than that.

actually looks pretty much like what one expects from ISO640 in a compact P&S

for contrast here is SD780 at ISO800

wow i remember my canon s5

 at ISO 200 it would start to get a little grainy. ISO 1600 was laughably bad

not good.. i just picked up a sd780 and a underwater case for diving..

figured it would be a decent small p&s that i could take on vacations to compliment my dslr pics and use while diving...

wondering if i should return it now.. damnit..

It looks like a point and shoot... (read: It looks like it should...)

i broke out my new sd780 last night.. took a few pics and some hd video with it..

honestly it is what i expected out of a point and shoot.. it will be used by my gf more than me and for diving it should do the trick for the time being.

my friend's mom just got a 780 and apparently when she called Canon asking about poor picture quality indoors they told her "don't do that"

as in don't use it indoors.

    :ugh:

taken with my SD500 four years ago. almost no light, no flash, and it's sharper than the SD940 with tons of light

basically every indoor picture I take with it in auto mode, regardless of how much light is available, has ISO640

    Wirelessly posted via wap.offtopic.com (Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.13918/1280; U; en) Presto/2.2.0)

I played around with some older point and shoots i have last night. You really do forget how bad it can be when you have much better cameras at your disposal. I did charge up my panny fz5 and decided to carry it today. Maybe i can get a few good shots out of it.

My old canon powershots actually do pretty well. I think the powershot line has gotten a little worse over time.

the SD500 shot at much longer exposure rate. camera metering system compensated with a lower ISO sensitivity ... which drives fewer noise as byproduct.

in terms of clarity and sharpness the SD940 shot was with a larger aperture, which results in a shallower depth of focus... so it depends what the focus target is and whether youre localizing on that as judgement of overall picture quality

those 2 shots (SD500 vs SD940) arent comparable... unless your complaint is in the changes to the metering and processing.

indoors and low-light situation pretty much all compact p&s will perform the same save for few with larger and/or better sensors like Fuji FDs or Canon S90

in terms of "older" vs "newer" Canon Powershots I dont think the processing or optics or sensors have changed much... its just a matter of configuring and using the camera correctly and you'll find they produce similar results

I have that same blender and it's garbage.

I'd take that camera back if you can, it looks pretty rough.

Almost every point and shoot looks like shit above iso 200, forget 640.

    sd780 vs sd550

all pics are taken in full auto mode.

white balance is way off and picasa tends to destroy the resolution..

i'm pretty happy with my sd780. takes great pics outdoors/good lighting, and i dont expect poor lighting or high iso pics to look all that great, thats what my dslr + L's are for. for concert videos i am impressed, the bass doesnt distort at all, and general videos are quite good for being a p&s.
