SCOTTSDALE - More than 700 guns are sitting unspoken for in a Scottsdale police property room, destined to be destroyed at a smelting facility by the end of the year.

Some people find guns in the park. Others have called police after finding them in the glove compartments of rental cars.

One gun is from an unsolved murder, said Ken Racine, Scottsdale's police property and evidence manager. advertisement

"That doesn't happen too often, but people do find them," Racine said. "We've had people tell us they've found it on their front lawn or something like that."

As many as 1,500 firearms are held at Scottsdale Police District 2 headquarters on Via Linda. Several hundred are being kept as evidence or for court cases; the rest will be incinerated at a mining site in Globe, Racine said.

Many of those weapons were advertised in a local newspaper earlier this fall, per a Scottsdale ordinance.

Racine said police will send out letters and make other attempts at contacting the guns' rightful owners, although few people actually call to get them back.

"We do get some responses, but it's rare," he said.

Unlike some Valley municipalities, Scottsdale does not put unclaimed weapons up for auction. The department does one weapons disposal per year.

Racine said the number of guns being disposed of this year is higher than past years, when police have destroyed about 500 or so.

I wonder if I could claim anything :wtc:

Makes me wonder if they really tried that hard to contact the owners.

    Lost and found:
Some black guns and some silver ones.
Contact the ATF. Background check will be run upon contact. LOL
