I have a few more months stationed on this island, but my plan is to line up a vehicle for when I get back in the states, and I'll be visiting my cousin on leave and she just happens to be the lead salesman at a local Subaru dealership.

I have a little bit of experience with the WRX, but can someone point me in the right direction to a good site? I just need info on what to look out for, etc.

Plus, if anyone has pics of theirs and want to whore them out here..

    My bugeye

Subaru's are really reliable cars, but I know that the bugeyes (02-03) are known for their glass tranny, but only if you dump the clutch at 5k rpm, which is a bad idea on any car. I've also heard that many people have done such a thing without fucking up the tranny.

I've also heard of people burning through their clutch pretty easily, but then again those people are idiot drivers. :dunno:

I have nothing but the highest praise for Subaru vehicles. I had one last to ~200k (sitting in a driveway without driving for 7 months while I was at school took its toll) and my family had another Subaru that lasted until 260k. Just look through any reviews that you can find.

www.nasioc.com is a great site. Its a collection of people in N.America that own Imprezas. Other than that, good luck with your car hunting and I hope to see you driving a WRX soon.

And thank you for your service.

Nice. I test drove a 02 Sonic Blue WRX in 02, and at the time I owned a 12 second 1994 Z28. Yet, I was still very impressed with the power. Just couldnt get the dealer to budge on the price. I've been a big fan of Subaru's forever, because I've followed WRC since the late early 90s. But I think I'd end up setting it up for autocross, and not off-road racing. What kinda gas mileage do you get on average, and how is insurance on the the little bugger? ;) Oh, and thank you for the thanks for serving. It's really no big deal... :)

I usually get around 350 miles to a tank, so with a 15 gallon tank thats a little over 23 mpg. Not as good as the my previous Subaru at its height (it could get around 400 miles per tank), but thats still pretty good for a car with a turbo. It obviously depends on how you drive the car.

As for the insurance, I'm not exactly the best one to ask because I'm a 19 yo male. My insurance is naturally high. I pay around $1,200 a year, but thats with one speeding ticket on my record. I'm sure it'd be much cheaper for you.

23mpg isn't too bad. I was getting 25-28mpg with my Z28, 6 speed helped. But the insurance on it was more than what you pay, so it'll even out.

I've heard it called Scooby forever... :dunno:

Great cars, love mine. I've added an AVO turbo kit, made it even more fun.

As for sites, www.nasioc.com is a big one that is mainly WRX-related now. There are some others, but since I don't have a WRX, I'm not familiar with those sites.

    www.clubwrx.com is really good
www.nasioc.com is good for information and meets in your local area (depending on which chapter you'd be in) but the general community can be diskish.
www.iwsti.com is really good for STI stuff =)

Daily driven "Stage 4" (vf30). Fun cars, great community. The thing I heard the most when I was looking for one was to try to find a completely unmodded one, down to the turbo heat shield and the intake silencer. Alot of times people will slap an exhaust or other mods on and won't touch the ecu cause they don't know any better. Then you end up getting a car thats running on the ragged edge without you even knowing it. The beauty of these cars though is the open ended ecu so you can change whatever you want (tune, check engine light codes, etc) for the cost of an obdII cable (90 bucks) and some free openecu software.
