i'm yet to test drive a mazda 3s. all that is around right now are mazda 3i's. the 3s's that they do have are automatics which i dont want.

Can you elaborate on your situation?

Both cars are fairly solid, so it would be easier to see what you're looking for and what would fit your needs better.

i'm looking for a 5 speed car that gets better gas than my car now. i have a '99 grand prix gt that gets horrible gas. and i'm looking for something that is rather cheap. so something like a TC or 3. now i'm just trying to compare them to see which one is more reliable and overall a better car.

    Better gas.

From a well known and established company (don't have any real basis on that)

the mazda 3 does get better gas mileage, but not that much more than the scion. it is about a 3 mile/gallon difference. the car i have now averages about 15 miles/gallon. so either the scion or mazda would be a huge gain in mileage for me.

Both are great cars. Personally, if I were to chose between the two, I would probably jump on the scion because it is from a more reputable company in terms of reliability. However, since the scion just came out, it may be hard to get a configuration that you want. For the mazda3 check out www.mazdausa.com . You can search dealer's inventory by drivetrain options, colors, etc and you can probably locate the exact car you want.

i do like the look of the scion. plus, the scion's can be customized when you purchase one. and i do like the mazda 3 because of its small size and higher gas mileage. i'm leaning more to the scion right now.

not that this would be a deciding factor on which car to get, but the TC has to panoramic moonroof which i think it a cool accessory.

Also keep in mind that you can easily put an aftermarket stereo in the Scion while the Mazda 3 would require extensive modification.

yeah, the scion can have many mod's done to it with TRD parts. the mazda 3 doesn't have and mazdaspeed parts available yet, and i doubt it will be out anytime soon.

The magazines are saying the Tc is a porker for its class, although the mazda is only about 60lbs lighter, I would take the Mazda because it offers more room.

    The magazines??

I'm assuming you read either the currnt C&D or Import Tuner. I think they mentioned that the ~2900 lbs the TC weighs is heavy for its class but I would hesitate to call it a "porker". Even so it is hardly a deciding factor or even a point as you mention there is only a 60 lbs difference between the two.
A more important thing to mention about weight is its location. A 65/35 will feel noticably worse than a car that has a weight distribution of 60/40.

Since this car is going to be a daily driver I believe minor differences in performance are secondary to how the car 'fits' you. I would just test drive both until you have made up your mind (and take me to test drive the 3s Neo).

I'm pretty sure th Tc checks in at a 3000lbs and some change, but yeah its mostly gonna come down to preference in this class.
