School suspends boy for sketching gun
    Associated Press
    Aug. 22, 2007 06:34 AM

Chandler school officials have suspended a 13-year-old boy for sketching a picture that resembled a gun, saying it posed a threat to classmates.

But parents of the Payne Junior High School student said the drawing was a harmless doodle of a fake laser, and school officials overreacted.

"I just can't believe that there wasn't another way to resolve this," said Paula Mosteller, the boy's mother. "He's so upset. The school made him feel like he committed a crime. They are doing more damage than good."

The Mostellers said the drawing did not show blood, bullets, injuries, or target any human. They said it was just a drawing that resembled a gun.

But Payne Junior High administrators thought the sketch was enough of a threat and gave the boy a five-day suspension, later reduced to three days.

Chandler district spokesman Terry Locke said the sketch was "absolutely considered a threat," and threatening words or pictures are punishable.

The school did not contact police and did not provide counseling or an evaluate the boy to determine if he intended the drawing as a threat.

School officials issued the suspension Monday afternoon. They notified the student's father, Ben Mosteller. He met with school officials and persuaded them to shorten his son's suspension from 5 days to 3.

Ben Mosteller said that when he came to the school to discuss his son's punishment, school officials mentioned the seriousness of the issue and talked about the massacre at Colorado's Columbine High School - the site where two teenagers shot and killed 12 students and injured 24 others in 1999.

The Mostellers said the Columbine reference was extreme and offensive.

They have contacted the district's governing board about the incident involving their son.

    wow... I'm speechless.

Sounds to me like someone had an agenda against that boy we're not seeing, and used policy and fear to further that agenda.

If a kid draws a threatening picture, that leaves you to believe he is planning on killing someone, you don't suspend him and say "bad boy". You get that fucker arrested, or at the very least, out of your school district.

Holy cow, that's just silly. I can't even begin to understand their justification of that. Besides, I would think the best way is to be open about guns and things, at least that way you can spot the kids that have an unhealthy interest in violence.

I would have been expelled if they were this crazy back in the day. While being carried (literally) to the principals office in kindergarten I told the teacher I was going to get my dad's gun and shoot the school down:hsd:

But her name was Mrs. Oberganner :dunno:

I wish drawing a laser gun would have gotten me a week's vacation in 8th grade.

I got called to the Principal's office one day in middle school for making weapons from the metal spirals on the side of notebooks. Darts, shanks, etc etc. I forgot I gave one away to a buddy, who was showing them off and got it confiscated. Then he ratted me out, that bastard. The principal basically gave me a slap on the wrist and sent me back to class.

If that happened today, I'd probably be hung by my thumbs and labeled a terrorist.

I used to draw ak's and ar's all the time in class when I was bored. I'm glad I don't have to deal with that crap.

    I did as well :mamoru:

I used to bring Gun Digests to elementary school all the time. Me and my teacher would flip through them. Though the librarian took one suggesting it wasn't "proper" school reading material. I got it back at the teachers request though

I wonder how much shit one would get in for doing that now. With all those pictures of evil guns, one maybe able to fashion a firearm from a pencil :noes:

I once got some nunchucks confiscated in middle school. My mom had to go down and get them.

I'd probably be expelled for that these days. :ugh:

On the last day of professional development (teacher's meetings) last week I threw on this t-shirt [IMG] without really paying any attention to it... Wish I could have pulled another week of vacation with it.
