I need a quick cliffs notes on buying, owning and transporting guns (to the range) in New Jersey. I'm thinking about getting a handgun for target shooting and I'm curious what kind of a PITA I might be in for.

I hear NJ sucks to be a gun owner.

As said above packing.org .. similiar to NY I believe, a few month wait on permit and slightly worse with mags i think you guys are allowed only 10 round mags, we can own preban mags. I think in NJ even pellet guns have to be registered :mamoru:

I know about packing.org, but that doesn't help me at all. I don't need CCW info, just the cliffs on gun purchasing and ownership in NJ. To be more specific:

    1. What are the licensing requirements? (file @ gun shop or police dept, app fee, bg check yes/no, time to process app)
    2. Wait period for the gun?
    3. Separate reg of gun or just an owner license?
    4. Annual/perodic renewal of app yes/no?
    5. Cost of annual/periodic renewal?
    6. Open carry permitted?
    7. Requirement for secure/unloaded transport to/from range?

I relocated from AZ where things are just a bit easier to deal with, to put it kindly. I went to a local range/gun store and the guys working there were either idiots or were just not interested in answering questions. So, can someone fill me in on the basics?

I'm in NY so I dont know specifics might want to do a search for FOID, Firearm Owner Identifcation card, you have to obtain one in Jersey to own any type of firearm (including pellet guns :greddy: )
    6. In jersey are you crazy?
    7. I believe all firearms must be unloaded, ammo/magazines kept seperate, handguns may need to be kept in locked case not sure.

Like I said, I'm from AZ. Hell, I could open carry into a bank in AZ and no one would flinch. *sigh*

I wish it was like that here, but other then possibly NH, theres no states in the north east that allow open carry. If your going to be moving there if you own any type of "assualt rifles" may as well sell them now or give them to family to hold onto, I know NJ bans all AK type guns, not sure but i think AR15's too, 10 round limit on mag's. I wouldn't move here unless absolutly neccasary I'm trying my hardest to get out of NY and down south or out west.

Sadly, I'm already here and I hate it. I sold my guns before I left AZ a few years ago, but I really miss going to the range. I was curios to know what kind of major PITA I was in for with buying the gun and transporting it to the range.

Handgun wise for just target shooting not to carry I guess its not to hard to get your FOID card, rifles like i said some are banned there. quick google for foid and new jersey should turn up where you go to get a card.

    1. file at local PD
    2. no wait period if NICS check is clear.
    3. NJ firearms ID is good for rifles and shotguns, must apply for a permit to purchase for each handgun you purchase.
    4. No
    5. N/A
    6. No
    7. Gun locked unloaded in trunk separate from ammo.

EDIT: #2 answer is for purchasing gun, not for waiting for permit
