Should I have selected a PM shift rather than an AM shift? Is it more fun at night?
I did one at night back in high school and it was pretty entertaining. Unmarked car loaded with high school kids and one cop. People probably thought we were a gang until the guy started pulling people over.
I've always done it at nighttime, usually when I had a free weekend night, or the night of some event. Finding drunks/drugs/stupid kids is what you are hoping for.
Do it at night, never take the Sunday afternoon shift
Nights are usually more fun, but some weird shit does happen during the day.
during the day would be pretty boring i'd assume.. but i dont know how your town is.
plus the drunks and retards tend to come out at night, so i would imagine it would be a lot more fun at night.. especially if its the overnight/graveyard shift
overnight, especially if the patrol area includes some bars and strip clubs. Last ride-along I went on the cop decided to meet another officer to perform a spot check on the girl's attire at a couple strip clubs (topless only). They handed me a flashlight and just said to walk around with them like I was a plain-clothes officer
Daytime ride-alongs usually just resulted in some truancy field interviews, a couple burglary reports and some responses to false alarms. Basically, pretty boring shit.
Don't know anything about this... What is the protocol to go about scheduling one?
AM, you'll be taking a lot of morning commute BS.
Do eves or some of a mids shift. 7p-3a is pretty much primetime anywhere you go.
I think it would be fun for a ride along. Don't you have to be a troubled teen or someone aspiring to be a LEO? Can a regular individual go along just to check it out?
Dayshift is pretty much taking theft/vandalism/bs reports and working traffic accidents. Evenings and midnights are where the fun happens.
What if I'm a troubled teen aspiring to be a LEO?
No. Yes, depending on the dept's policy. Most places, all you have to do is call up and inquire, they'll tell you what days you can go, you go in, sign a waiver, and then go ride.
Shoulda taken the night shift. Day shift was boring as fuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Funnest one I ever went on was a very rural county with a very young deputy. God damn rural county sheriffs officers can drive!
I've been on a few. Most of mine have been on 7a-4pm-ish and always had a blast.
our ride along request form asks if you have a concealed weapons permit
They didn't ask me "officially", but the officer was a friend of mine that I rode motorcycles with and he knew I carried. He said it would be best if I didn't bring my gun. But he did show me where the release for the shotgun was in case the SHTF.
worked for me.
now I are one.
I want to do a ride along with you smartypants. The feds offer such fun?
I'm going to ride in the area I live in and hang our around. Should be interesting. I'm going to need to reschedule for the PM shift.
Changed it to PM shift, starts at 3PM
When are you going? Keep us posted
This saturday at 3
I'm excited, I think I have a hard on.
