Say you had to choose one of these two laptops, assuming cost is not an issue

    which one and why?

    Sony Vaio SZ 360
    Exact Model + Specs
    vs.

    Dell XPS M1210
    assuming 80GB 7200RPM
    2GHz processor
    2GB RAM
    256mb nVidia GeForce

As far as I can tell, the tradeoff is screen size vs. USB ports + slightly longer battery life.

And can anyone tell me if I'm right when I interpret the specs to mean that I can hook both up to a tv/monitor to record TV or view on a larger screen?

sorry for the ignorance in advance, I'm using a prehistoric computer right now :wtc:

I'd take the sony. Every Dell I've owned has died after 2 years. I've got a vaio that has been functioning for 10 years.

10 years ago was 1996. I doubt anyone is using a computer from back then.

To the OP, in regards to the dell, you are picking the XPS line which is their high end line of comps. THe inspiron line has better computers for the money....basically you'll get more for your money. The E1505 is a nice, light, cheep but powerful computer. There's even a 1405 I think.

So a lot of you guys think Dell has quality/durability issues?

In regards to the XPS vs. Inspiron, I tried looking at 1405s/1505s but I think they're not available in Canada, as they're not listed on the Canadian Dell website. I don't mind spending the extra money, I know I'm probably going overboard with the processor/ram etc. but I can usually make computers last quite a while. Even though probably no one is using a computer from 1996 I'm currently using one frmo 1998...(Dell Dimension XPS 450)

The 1405 is the same as the 640m and the 1505 is the same as the 6400m. Between the 2, the biggest difference is that the 6400 can be had with a real video card while the 640 can't, onboard only.

One of the guys at work wanted a 1210, so that's what I got for him. He loves it, battery life is great, it weights nothing and has been a really good performer so far. He's fairly rough on his notebook and travels for half the hockey season, and it's held up very well.

I didn't read all the posts, but I just got my M1210 last night and LOVE it... I just got the T5600, 1gig RAM, integrated video, DVD burner, 9 cell battery for about ~$1500. I setup a Dell preferred account and qualified for 1-year no interest. I used it on the battery for about 2-3 hours last night and the meter barely budged.

oh ok, I'm just realizing now that when you said POS equipment I thought you meant piece of shit but you meant point of sale. I was like, I thought the new MTS centre would have had great equipment!

Personally, I'd pass on both of them. I'd stick with Fujitsu, IBM (Lenovo), or ASUS.

Id say Sony or maybe an IBM. We use thinkpads at work and they are pretty nice and lightweight. Only thing is they come preloaded with a bunch of crap that always loads up from IBM. After a little cleanup they are pretty quick.
