You are acting like we are scrapping every F-22 we already have. I think SecDef Gates has done a pretty good job so far. He knows more about all this shit than you, me, or anyone else in this forum and he supports this.

Plus he is giving shit loads more money to Army Aviation which is just fine with me.

I guess my title is somewhat misleading. I know we are not scrapping them all but just about cutting production in half. I'm sure the 187 we already have is plenty but in comparison to how much these bullshit bailouts cost, we should continue production.

Do you not think Russia and China are not currently trying to build something equal or better to the 22?

Of course they are trying, but neither are anywhere close to having anything that they could field in sufficient numbers anytime soon. It's not like it wold be difficult for us to restart production on more when we actually need them either. We have enough for now, we can build more when we need more. We need to give money to programs that we need right now.

No, like SF and rotary wing, the stuff that all the commanders in the field told Gates they needed to win in the wars we are currently fighting.

From my understanding, the money is going in part to things like the F-35. So even with the cut, the money is going to other military projects, not thinks like health care.

The cost to maintain F-22 is pretty high too IIRC so reducing the total number should save money in the long term as well.

I'd agree with your initial outrage if the money saved wasn't staying in the defense budget, but I am pretty sure it is and just going to other defense programs.

    they're making 500 more f-35s instead
it's a more up to date model designed to accomplish the same tasks, isn't it?

f22 hasn't flown one combat mission in iraq/afghanistan thus far.

Gates has an awesome track record, I don't believe he's doing this for a liberal agenda...

F-22A is a stealth air superiority fighter.. the F-35 LII is a stealth fighter/bomber.. designed for CAS.. it will replace the AV8 Harrier and unfortunately the A-10C Thunderbolts..

if a country really wants to beat us, give everyone in the nation Kalashnikovs and RPGs.. the administration is goddamn retarded.. as always with the same chain of command bullshit.. more funds need to be directed to SOF, rotary wing, and the infastructure (education, healthcare) of afghanistan/iraq.. shits fucked up.. the above mentioned aircraft won't win our current conflicts.. china is still busy "rational shopping" and venezuela hangs on the nuts of Russia's Sukhoi industry, but Russia can't even keep up with us.. its all so fucking hysterical

I'm laughing at all of these kneejerk reactions to the cancellation of a program aimed at providing additional aircraft on top of the 187 we already have (some 40 of which are still coming down the pipe).

Like I said in the DIAC post - liberals knee-jerk when social programs get cut, conservatives knee-jerk when military programs get cut.

You guys think the federal government is spending too much money? Quit crying when we de-fund unnecessary military programs.

so is there actually confirmation the money is going back to programs we need or is it disappearing into the black hole of general spending?

I'm a bit curious on the claimed 30 hours of maintenance to one hour of flight time. Those are F-14 type numbers if they're accurate. Then again, it looked like the stat came from the same folks who brought us the "90% of drug gang weapons come from the States" figures. Can anyone confirm or deny the F-22 is that maintenance-intensive?
