I'm thinking about getting a satellite phone, but everything I see looks obscenely expensive to buy and use. Anyone know of a site that sells affordable phones with a pay-as-you-go rate that won't chew your nuts off every time you use it? :x:

 I'll try the main forum. Surely somebody on OT knows of such a phone/service. :hsd:

I'm not sure what you mean by satellite phone? If you are just wanting a cell phone to be able to make/receive calls to and from the U.S. while you are in Iraq then they are fairly inexpensive (less than $100).

Hmm my buddy had good luck with his cell. I do remember him looking into them before he left and they were expensive regardless unless you had a few people go in with you. Fortunately i'm not worried having both VOIP and multiple sat phones available.

I get no cell service near my CHU. And I really don't like using IRAQNA cell phones. I spent several years as a communications technician for AT&T, where we had unrestricted access to any/all phone lines. :hsugh:

Also, there are many times during our missions when we are unable to reach any of our support assets (land owners, air weapons team, etc). We only carry one unit-provided satphone on our missions. If the vehicle that has the satphone gets a catastrophic hit in a dead radio area, we are completely on our own. I like alternatives. :hsughno:

you must have the magic touch.

every time I either use one or have to talk to someone on one it drops out after about 3 minutes

you're making it sound like it's for official duties, have the unit buy it :) Otherwise you won't get away spending less than a grand to start talking.

one of my guys had one while in theatre. big friggin thing that looked liked those old brick cellphones with an antennae that will give you cancer if you use it for too long. I'll try to get the specifics but I do recall him saying it was $1 a minute and they only come in packages of 500 minutes.

Maybe it's the location or the type of phone purchased? Bassjunky purchased a phone/sim card in Iraq, and so far there hasn't been any problems on either end. The phone has caller id, and the call connections have typically all been clear, noise/static/delay free, and there is no charge for him to receive calls. No complaints here.

When I was there personal phones were strictly band. But then again, that was 4 years ago. I just can't see having a personal phone as a good idea.

Of course I'm going to use it for personal calls. :ugh2:

But it would also be extremely handy during times when we are out of radio contact with support elements.
