I'm really tempted to buy this card, but am hesitating for two reasons: apparently it is very large (1 foot long) and very loud. However, I have a very high tolerance for noise anyway, so I'm wondering if it's actually obnoxious and if the performance is worth it. Thanks OT :wavey:

Dunno about that specific card, but I used ATi cards for years until my only upgrade path for my machine was to go nVidia, and once I tried nVidia's drivers I decided never to go back to ATi.

Granted, AMD has whipped them into shape a lot, but nVidia's drivers still seem to be the gold standard.

    yeah,... they're loud
    performance,... it's somewhere between nvidia's GTX275 - GTX280
about the same as ATI's new 4890
just check the prices between those cards. (got my GTX280 for $200 at a buy.com deal)

one advantage of the 4850 x2 over the others is the 2GB VRAM,... better for high res

Well, I have only used Nvidia cards thus far which is why I'm wondering if the performance would be worth the switch.

In every single benchmark I've seen it smoked every card but the 4870x2.

At this point, I think ATi is only the better choice if you're buying a laptop with an AMD processor and an ATi graphics card integrated, because AMD has put a lot of effort into meshing their CPUs and GPUs together.

Other than that scenario, I'd stick with nVidia.

Goddamn this price is so tempting and the reviews all say is rapes all but the 4870 and the 285 and up Nvidia cards, but the reviews also say it's loud. I wish I could fucking hear this thing because I really need a solid card for not just gaming, but intense CAD work and other EE programs.

assuming the fan is similar to the one on the 4870x2 that I have, it's not an issue unless you have it overclocked in a major way and have the fan speed cranked up in the drivers.

Okay, finished the computer yesterday, and as I expected, it's people who are sensitive to noise that will be affected by it. It isn't a big deal in the slightest for me. The case fans make more noise than the card does, but only whe the case fans are on high. Since I keep them on low, all you can hear is moving air. Guess that's just proving the P180 is a quiet is as hell case. This shit fucking COOKS games though, it's amazing the difference between 1440 and 1920 resolution.
