My GF (most amazing) bought me a set of speaker stands for my Vienna Accoustic speakers. When assembling them it said that I was able to fill the poles in the stand with sand or shoot.... ? Is there a reason todo this other than to make it more heavy/sturdy? Also will this dampen the sound in a good way? Is there any substance better to use than others?

For anyone who cares, I used sand, it appears after much digging via the web, to be the best/cheapest method. Shot seems to be slightly better because of weight, but no one can really make a good argument, but definitely needed mass loading to prevent the poles from having Doppler effects.
